Which blinds are best for privacy?
Shutters offer the best privacy of any window covering. When the louvres are closed, there is no way to see through them from outside. Unlike fabric blinds, shutters have no gaps between slats and no light bleed around the edges.
If shutters are outside your budget, venetian blinds are a good alternative. Tilt the slats upward so the raised edge faces the street. This blocks the view from outside while still letting light into the room from above. The angle means people at street level cannot see in.
For full privacy with fabric blinds, a roller blind in a dim-out or blackout fabric works well. Dim-out fabric blocks the view completely during the day. At night with lights on, you may see a faint silhouette through dim-out fabric. Blackout fabric blocks everything.
Day and night blinds are worth considering for rooms where you want privacy at times but open views at others. Align the solid strips for privacy, or shift to the sheer strips for filtered light.
Bottom-up blinds are useful for ground-floor rooms facing a pavement. The blind covers the lower half of the window for privacy while leaving the top half open for light and sky views.
For bathrooms, moisture-resistant roller blinds or faux wood venetians are the safest choice. They handle humidity without warping or staining.
