Coventry Blinds & Shutters

Are all modern blinds child-safe?

Not all blinds are child-safe by default, but regulations have improved significantly. Since 2014, UK safety standards require all new blinds sold with cords or chains to include a child safety device. This is usually a cleat, a breakaway connector, or a tensioning device that prevents loose loops.

The safest blinds are those with no external cords or chains at all. These include:

Perfect Fit blinds, which clip into the window frame with no operating cord. Spring-loaded roller blinds, which use a push-pull mechanism instead of a chain. Electric blinds, which are operated by remote control. Shutters, which use a tilt rod or hand operation.

If you choose a blind with a chain or cord, a safety cleat should be fitted to the wall to keep the loop out of reach. Breakaway connectors are another option. These snap apart under pressure, so if a child pulls on the cord, the loop breaks open.

For homes with young children, we recommend cordless options wherever possible. The peace of mind is worth it. In nurseries and children's bedrooms, Perfect Fit blackout blinds or spring-loaded rollers are the most popular choices.

All blinds we supply meet current UK child safety regulations. Our fitters install safety devices as standard where cords are present. If you have older blinds with loose cords, we can retrofit safety cleats during a fitting visit.
