Do I need planning permission for plantation shutters?
For the vast majority of homes, you do not need planning permission to fit interior plantation shutters. They are an internal window covering, like blinds or curtains, and fitting them does not change the exterior of the property.
There are a couple of exceptions worth knowing about. If your home is a listed building, you may need listed building consent for internal alterations, including window fittings, so it is worth checking with your local authority before ordering. Similarly, if you live in a conservation area, external changes are controlled, but interior shutters fitted inside the window are normally fine.
If you rent, you do not need planning permission, but you should get your landlord's agreement before drilling into frames. No-drill options such as certain shutter and Perfect Fit systems can avoid that issue entirely.
Exterior shutters are a different matter and can need permission, but these are rare in UK homes. Standard internal plantation shutters are almost always permitted development.
