Made-to-measure curtains vs ready-made — is it worth it?

Made-to-measure curtains fit your window exactly. Ready-made curtains come in standard sizes and often need hemming, bunching, or compromising on the drop length. The difference is visible the moment they are hung.

Ready-made curtains are sold in fixed widths, typically 117cm, 168cm, or 228cm. If your window falls between sizes, the curtains either look skimpy or have too much excess fabric. Drop lengths are limited too, usually 137cm, 183cm, or 228cm.

Made-to-measure curtains are cut to the exact width and drop of your window. The fullness of the fabric is calculated precisely so they hang correctly when drawn. Hems are finished to the right length. Headers are matched to your track or pole.

The fabric choice is another major difference. Ready-made ranges are limited to whatever the retailer stocks. Made-to-measure opens up hundreds of fabrics, patterns, and lining options including blackout, thermal, and interlining for a luxurious weight.

On cost, ready-made curtains are cheaper for standard window sizes. But once you factor in alteration costs and the likelihood of a less-than-perfect fit, the gap narrows. For bay windows, unusually tall windows, or wide openings, made-to-measure is almost always the better investment.

We bring our full fabric range to your home so you can see colours and textures in your own light. Measuring and fitting is included.
