Which blinds are best for keeping heat out in summer?

To keep rooms cooler in summer, you want blinds that reflect and block solar heat before it builds up inside. The most effective options are honeycomb (pleated) blinds, blinds with a reflective or solar-coated fabric, and dedicated conservatory or roof blinds.

Honeycomb pleated blinds trap air in their cell structure, which slows heat transfer through the glass in both directions — cooler in summer, warmer in winter. They are one of the best all-round choices for energy efficiency.

Roller blinds with a metallic or solar-reflective backing bounce a large share of the sun's heat back out through the window. Light colours reflect more heat than dark ones, so a pale fabric helps.

Conservatories and rooms with large glazed areas or roof lanterns get hottest, and these need purpose-made roof and side blinds to manage the heat properly. A standard blind on a vertical window alone will not be enough there.

Fitting the blind close to the glass improves the effect. We advise on the best heat-reducing option for each room, with free measuring and fitting.
