Coventry Blinds & Shutters

How do you measure windows for made-to-measure blinds?

Accurate measuring is the difference between a blind that fits perfectly and one that looks wrong. There are two main fitting types: inside the recess and outside the recess. Each requires different measurements.

For an inside-recess fit, measure the width at three points: top, middle, and bottom of the recess. Use the narrowest measurement. Then measure the drop at three points: left, centre, and right. Use the longest measurement. This accounts for recesses that are not perfectly square, which is common in older properties.

For an outside-recess fit, measure the width you want the blind to cover. Add at least 5cm each side to prevent light gaps. Measure the drop from where the bracket will sit to where you want the blind to finish. Allow 10cm above the recess for the headrail.

Always use a metal tape measure, not a fabric one. Fabric stretches. Measure in millimetres for precision. Round down rather than up because a blind that is too wide will not fit in the recess.

Bay windows are the trickiest to measure because the angles between each section need to be exact. A digital angle finder helps, but it is easy to get wrong.

This is exactly why we offer free measuring. Our fitters have the tools and the experience to get it right first time. No charge, no obligation.
