Shutters vs blinds — which is better value?
Shutters cost more upfront than blinds. A set of plantation shutters for a standard window typically costs several times more than a roller or vertical blind for the same opening. But shutters last significantly longer, often 20 to 25 years or more with minimal maintenance.
Blinds generally last 5 to 10 years depending on the type, fabric quality, and how much use they get. Over a 20-year period, you might replace blinds two or three times, which narrows the cost gap.
Shutters also add value to a property. Estate agents often list them as a selling point because they look premium and buyers see them as a permanent fixture. Blinds are rarely mentioned in property listings.
From a practical standpoint, shutters offer excellent insulation and noise reduction. The solid panels create a barrier that fabric blinds cannot match. They are also very easy to clean with just a damp cloth.
Blinds win on variety. There are far more fabric options, colours, and patterns available in blinds than in shutters. If you want a specific look or need to match existing decor closely, blinds give you more flexibility.
The best approach is to consider shutters for the rooms you use most and where they will be seen by visitors. Use blinds for bedrooms, utility rooms, and other private spaces where function matters more than appearance.
